Waiting

March 8, 2018

It's Thursday. Ron says run an easy two miles. He says the hay is in the barn, the work had been done.

While I'm waiting, I think I will compile a complete list of my races and key time trials and workouts ... no high school cross country or track results for now (which are subject to memory and dateless). There are undoubtedly missing results, but not many; they may turn up as I comb through the cluster of stuff in my house.

March 10, 2018 Saturday

Three days to go ...

... and in a little while on a sunny but 32 degree day, I am going to run an easy two miles and cap it off with 3x100 meter (or thereabouts) striders down by the Detroit River on the Windsor side.

I am experiencing one of my (and, in fact, many other runners’) mental/confidence impediments to the physical conditioning required for racing: the taper. Without fail, it seems that backing down and resting up to be fresh and strong on race day, a necessity, is having the opposite effect, meaning that, psychologically, I feel I am losing the conditioning I trained so hard to get. It never fails. Even after the 70 mile week of training for Boston, a very intense effort at fast speeds, I felt that the drop to tapering the following week, only one week from the marathon, in which I ran only 10 miles, was going to diminish my racing condition and therefore performance to some degree.

Which we all know is nonsense.

But which most of us feel is happening.

It has been said that tapering is similar to the effects of stopping a drug addiction cold turkey.

You go crazy.

Happens every time.

That is what I am dealing with today, and will be tomorrow, and the day after tomorrow.

I will have to fight off the doubts when I toe the line Tuesday night.

Workout: 2 miles: 17:34; 9:26, 8:03 (fartlek warmup)

3x105.6
18.06 5:01/mile
18 5:00/mile
17.6 4:53.33/mile

(The 17.60 time for the last strider is duly noted!)

Well, I don’t believe it; but is the best estimate I can come up with based on the information I have from Garmin: .06 miles is 105.6 yards.

March 11, Sunday

I had a nice messenger exchange with Ron last night about not having too much of a running strategy beyond “feeling positive, clearing the head, run smart but don’t get too hung up on splits or specifics — run smart, but run by feel.”

Two days to go. I’m going to run somewhere between one and two miles really, really easy. Tomorrow I’m going to run a mile really slow to “limber up”.

That’s it.

In the next 48 hours plus, when I think about the upcoming run, I’m going to envision positivity and confidence, imagine an outcome, but try not to think about it too much. In the meantime, I’m going to just enjoy the day today, the drive home tomorrow, and opening up my book, The Four-Minute Mile, by Roger Bannister.

Ran 2 today with Louie on Victoria Street, Windsor. Each under 10, nice and easy.

I’m ready to go home. It’s 9:07 p.m. on Daylight BS Savings Time Day.

March 12, 2018 Monday

I didn’t sleep all that well last night. I am ready to go home.

I am making the best of my situation, I guess ...

Tomorrow is the mile. I still have that feeling of rejection trigger-abled as easily as ever. I wish I could get rid of that. I’m working on a mental adjustment in that regard.

On tomorrow: The mile time trial is an opportunity — one that doesn’t come around very often to anybody, generally speaking, and to me specifically, because I was able to prepare and follow a training schedule 1) created by a sub-4-minute miler; 2) without injury. And thirdly, I will have the benefit of some four other runners also capable of breaking 6 minutes, all very close in the ability to do that.

I plan to make the most of this opportunity. I have a lot to gain.

March 13, 2018 Tuesday.

Today is the day. I woke up at 2:30 a.m. last night, read some Bannister (very good), slept some, woke up again, slept some, woke up around 7 a.m.

Met my friend David for coffee.

Dealt with the dog digging again.

On my Facebook memories. Today is the date Ed Whitlock died one year ago. What timing, a surprise.

Grocery shopping at Aldi, I parked right behind a white Mini Cooper, about the same year as yours, Sharon, but an automatic. I’m sure it’s a car you’ve seen around here. So synchronistic.
